Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 24, claimed her 5th ASP Women’s World Title today, winning the Roxy Pro Biarritz over Tyler Wright (AUS), 18 in Biarritz, France, today.
Today’s
incredible achievement puts the young natural-footer in an elite class
of surfers to win five or more ASP World Titles, overtaking records set
by Freida Zamba (USA), Wendy Botha (AUS) and Lisa Andersen (USA).
For
those watching closely, women and therefore the world have a rare
talent on tour. Stephanie's talent is unsurpassed in competitive
surfing. Her style, power and flow are bar none and that not including
that special something it takes to win over and over. Like Kelly, Stephanie
is approachable, nice unassuming and humble on land but in a jersey there's a vital transformation; they become
competitive machines of perfection.
Newly proclaimed 5th ASP Women’s World Champion Stephanie Gilmore has dominated women’s professional surfing since the day she appeared on the scene as a rookie in 2007 and captured her first world title- a feat still unmatched in professional surfing. In 2012, the 24-year-old Australian will now add ‘Reigning World Champ’ to a list of accomplishments that already includes the 20 elite World Tour victories, the 2010 Laureus Action Sports Person of the Year Award and the 2011 ESPN ESPY Female Action Sports Person of the Year Award.

Surf News, 13 July, 2012 : Jeffrey s Bay -- Brazilian surfer Adriano De Souza has won the ASP 6-Star Billabong Pro Jeffrey s Bay defeating French surfer Joan Duru in small and difficult conditions in the Final with polished and dynamic surfing.

Second upset was a dominant Dale Staples defeating John John Florence from Hawaii. Surfing fast and smooth, Dale kept John John at bay all the way through to a nail-biting finish, with the young South African getting the nod from the judges. Dale was eventually knocked out by Aritz Aranburu (EUK) in the quarter-finals and finished as the highest placed South African in the event.

Although smaller than the absolute perfection that persisted throughout the first three days of competition, there were still excellent, high-scoring waves coming through and the remaining competitors were throwing it down on the fast, lined up Super-tubes walls.
In the first semi-final it was Adriano De Souza against Ezekiel Lau (HAW) with the young Brazilian blasting his way through the heat and earning his spot in the final. The second semi-final was a one-sided affair between Duru and Aritz Aranburu (EUK), with Duru winning the heat comfortably and heading on to the final.
By the time the final heat paddled out, the bad weather that the contest organizers had been tracking all week was upon the competitors. With the onshore wind up and the rain falling, the two competitors went tooth and nail, with Duru quickly scoring a 9.27 out of a possible 10 points, showing that the conditions were still extremely contestable.

“I’ve come to South Africa and to Jeffrey s Bay for so many years, and have always seen the guys win the Billabong Pro, and now it’s my turn,” said Adriano. “I’m just so happy, and I’m going to remember this win for my whole life. J-Bay is a special place for me and hopefully see you again next year.”
The Nixon Winner Takes All prize of a US$10,000 jewel-encrusted Nixon watch for the highest heat score of the event went to Nathan Hedge (AUS) for his incredible 19.27 score in the first round of the event. “What a sick prize,” said Nathan. “A few years ago I was in the final with AI and he needed a ten to beat me and he got it, so maybe it was AI who sent me the ten this year.”

Perfect Start for ASP 6-Star Billabong Pro J Bay
Durban’s Davey VanZyl advanced into Round 2 of the Billabong Pro JBay today.
Competitors in the US$155,000 tournament awoke to epic two-metre plus conditions on Day 1 and it was the “Hog” who stole the show, belting the long J’Bay walls and winning the crowd with his enthusiastic claims.
The semi-retired 34 year-old achieved his best world tour result at the famous J’Bay point break back in 2004, posting a finals result that boosted him to a career high 7th in the world. And today, the Hog was back to his J’Bay best, easily registering the highest two-wave combined heat total of 19.27 out of a possible perfect 20 points.
Other surfers to progress to Round 2 with wins today included reigning ASP World Junior Champion Ciao Ibelli (BRA), local favourite and Supertubes specialist Sean Holmes (ZAF), Hawaii’s Sebastien Zietz (Haw) and 2010 World Junior Champion, Jack Freestone (Gold Coast, AUS).
The excellent surf is forecasted to continue on Day 2 when 10 of the world’s highest rated campaigners are due to hit the water. Among the big-name draw cards are two-time and defending Billabong Pro champion, Jordy Smith (ZAF), Hawaiian prodigy and current world rated number five, John John Florence (Oahu, Haw), Brazilian Adriano De Souza (BRA) and former Men’s World Champion, C.J. Hobgood (FL, USA).
Organisers expect to start from 07:00am local time.
The official press launch was held last night and attended by local dignitaries Mr Makhulbulu and Councillor Virginia Cameleo Benjamin, representative of the Department of Sports, Recreation Arts and Culture.
By becoming a World Qualifying Series tournament, the Billabong Pro has this year increased its field from 38 to 144 competitors, affording dozens of local and international hopefuls a chance at competing at one of the world’s premier wave locations.

I came to the beach very early in the morning the winds were already blowing and the place was a mess, I decided to go in the water anyway the waves were 6 to 10 feet in size and a lot of current.
